Named for the Female Followers of Bacchus

In French, Bacchante refers to a female follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, revelry, and ecstasy (equivalent to the Greek Dionysus). About the Maker

The Bayel Glass Company, officially known as the Cristallerie Royale de Champagne, was established in 1666 in the village of Bayel, located in the Champagne region of France. The company was founded by Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay, a master glassmaker from Murano, Italy, who brought his expertise to France under the patronage of the monks from the Clairvaux Abbey.

Over the centuries, Bayel became renowned for producing high-quality crystal glassware, including Champagne flutes, decanters, and decorative objects. The company held the prestigious title of Royal Manufacturer of Crystal in Bayel, granted by King Louis XIV, reflecting its significance in French glassmaking heritage.

Despite its illustrious history, the Cristallerie Royale de Champagne ceased operations in 2016. Today, the legacy of Bayel's glassmaking tradition is preserved through the Bayel Crystal Museum, which showcases the art and history of the region's master glassmakers.
