Hazel Atlas Company
The Hazel Atlas Company, established from the 1902 merger of several glass and metal manufacturers in Washington, Pennsylvania, became a dominant force in the American glassware industry. With its main offices in Wheeling, West Virginia, the company was a trailblazer in the automation of glassware production, boasting fifteen plants across various states by the 1930s. Hazel Atlas was particularly noted for its pressed glassware, earning acclaim as the "World’s Largest Tumbler Factory" in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Hazel Atlas was also innovative in glass color development, patenting distinctive hues like Ritz Blue and Sunset Yellow. In 1936, it introduced Platonite, a type of translucent milk glass that could be fired in various colors. Their product range was diverse, including green Ovide pattern dinnerware introduced in 1923, white milk glass inserts for zinc fruit jar lids, and a variety of containers and packaging solutions for commercial use.
Ownership of Hazel Atlas changed hands twice in the mid-20th century, first being purchased by Continental Can in 1957 and then by Brockway Glass Company in 1964. Hazel Atlas remains celebrated for its significant contributions to glass manufacturing and design.
