L.E. Smith Glass Company

Founded in 1907 by "Lew" Smith in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, the L.E. Smith Glass Company became renowned for its diverse range of glass products. Initially operating in Mount Pleasant, the company produced a variety of items including mustard jars, jelly jars, and even Model T headlights. After Lew Smith departed in 1911, the company moved operations to Greensburg in 1920, where it expanded its offerings to milk glass pieces such as figural animals, vases, and planters, alongside novelty items like miniature glass pianos and candy containers shaped like telephones.

During this period, L.E. Smith was also known for its production of both oil and electric lamps, introducing innovative designs like electric lamps shaped as sailboats. The 1960s saw a revival of its prewar lamp designs, and by the 1970s, the company ventured into carnival glass, producing commemorative plates with historical figures.

In 1979, L.E. Smith licensed a mold for a horse-shaped vase to Cherished Glass Wares, continuing its tradition of innovative glass design. Today, these pieces are cherished by vintage glass collectors, highlighting the company’s lasting legacy in American glassware craftsmanship.
