Georges Briard Glass
Georges Briard, born Jakub Brojdo in Ukraine in 1917, was a seminal figure in mid-century design, renowned for his distinctive and innovative glassware that became iconic in American homes. Moving to Chicago in 1937 to study at the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago, Briard's career flourished post-World War II, during which he served as a Russian interpreter under General Patton. After the war, he relocated to New York City, adopting the commercial name "Georges Briard" to enhance the French aesthetic of his brand.
Briard's designs are characterized by their vibrant use of 22-karat gold leaf, showcasing motifs that ranged from atomic starbursts typical of the 1950s to the kitschy owls and animals of the 1970s. His work extended beyond glassware into dinnerware, furniture, and other home accessories, featured in prestigious stores like Neiman Marcus. He was a prolific designer whose pieces encapsulated the essence of each era’s style. His artistic contributions were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, shortly before his death in 2005. Today, Briard’s creations are highly prized by collectors for their artistic flair and historical value.
